In a globally competitive marketplace and the current economic climate, it’s not enough to offer a product, service or set of skills and hope to succeed. Remember, there are plenty of people out there doing just that. For business growth or career success, the challenge is how to stand out so that you are the ‘go to’ person or business, the one people think of first when they need your skills, expertise, product or service!
Think “why should they choose me?” What makes you better, different, special and worth their investment of time or money? What’s your Unique Selling Point? What makes you outstanding? It’s not always about the best qualifications, or how long you’ve been in business. These are important to demonstrate credibility and can get you noticed, but they don’t guarantee success. So what will make you stand out from everyone else and be remembered for the right reasons? What’s the value, or potential value you offer to others that’s important to them?
Imagine you’re a business owner wanting to expand, or perhaps you’re an employee hoping for a significant promotion because you’re hungry for success! Then, imagine yourself as an investor seeking a return. If it was your investment or your business, what would you be looking for in you? With so much choice and so many businesses to choose from, all offering the product or service you need, what would grab your attention and make you want to invest in you? That’s the USP you need to identify and articulate. That’s the brand that will make you stand out from everyone else.
So when you’re out there selling yourself (and make no mistake, we are all doing that all of the time), you need to know the message you’re communicating and what it is that makes you stand out! Your message needs to be consistent, authentic and represent the best of who you are, as well as what you deliver, all of the time. That’s your Outstanding Unique Selling Point!
